General Advice Tips
- Start Early – start organising and preparing for your furniture removal early. Packing cartons can take time and the last thing you want is to get stressed by leaving it to the last minute. Pack everything you can in advance, whilst leaving a out a few necessities until the last minute. Eg: clothes, plates, cups, cutlery and cleaning stuff.
- Label Everything – It is very possible that your goods will not be the only goods on the truck, and sometimes, depending on where you are moving from and to, your furniture might be delivered in a different truck to the one which picks up your goods. Therefore it is important that you clearly label every box that will be moved. Write you name, room it is going to go in and also mark if the goods are fragile.
- Sturdy boxes-Use proper removalist cartons where possible. Supermarket boxes or flimsy cartons with no lids are far more susceptible to damage during your move. Plastic storage boxes may appear sturdy but often weaken or get cracked due to the weight inside them. Also its important to use packing tape when sealing your boxes. Most other tapes wont either stretch too much or wont adhere properly to your cartons. The last thing you want is for all your hard work packing going to waste when your box breaks and contents fall out.
- Box Everything-Smaller, loose items can be lost or broken in transit. A general rule is, if it can be boxed, then it probably should be. Ensure that you fill empty spaces inside your cartons with crushed paper or other appropriate materials so your items have less room to move around and break.
- Heavier items-If you are packing heavy items such as books, it is better to pack these in smaller book/wine cartons. If you pack books at the bottom of larger cartons they are likely to fall out or become difficulty to carry. If you find it difficult to work out the weight of your boxes, keep your bathroom scales close by. Try not to exceed a total weight of 15-20kg for any box.
- Newspapers may seem like a good idea when it comes to filling empty space in boxes or wrapping items, however this is a very messy way of packing. Newspapers will leave grubby marks on all your precious goods once unpacked. So, we recommend you use butchers paper.
- Fragile items – Make sure you line all cartons containing fragile items with crushed paper on the top, bottom and sides.
Voids (empty spaces) within fragile items (like drinking glasses and vases) should be stuffed with paper, socks or similar materials. By making your items more ‘solid’ in this way, you’ll reduce the likelihood of crushing and there will be less room for other small items to find their way in and rattle around.
- Larger items, such as tables, chairs and couches, and other items that are too large to put in a box will be wrapped in furniture removal pads by the furniture removalist when they are loading your job.
- Access – Access can be a critical factor, particularly for quotes obtained by the phone. For your own protection, inform the removalist fully about access at both ends of your removal. If you neglect to mention that although you are going from a low set home, it is at the bottom of a steep slope with fifty steeps – then you going to be charged more for the extra time it has taken.
- Plants – There is not normally a problem with transporting plants, but for interstate removals you will need to check with us in advance.
- Dangerous goods – Please check with us regarding any potential dangerous goods. Items like lawnmowers, whipper snippers, gas bottles all need to be empty to be able to transport them. Paint is another item that we are not able to carry also.
- Storage tips – Please make sure your fridge is clean and dry. Also don’t clean lounges with anything before they are placed in storage.
